We Tried to Slow Dance
04:27
|
|||
There is a rainbow over Santa Fe
You were on a side street
and you were walking away
There is an airplane
in the right corner of the sky
There is a newness
right here for you
We walked toward the square around 8 p.m.
There is a Zydeco band playing near the outdoor restaurant
I can hear everything you say
I swear
I met her over at a bar on Water street
We stayed up drinking until 2 a.m.
and in the parking lot we tried to slow dance
to the sounds of the night
Oh we tried to slow dance
we tried to slow dance
The music gets louder
coming from someone's pickup truck
The sky starts to wake up
and you are underneath the awning of the Georgia O'Keefe museum
trying to get a little more sleep
The morning it came in cold
You tried to get some tourists to buy you breakfast
at the Five & Dime General Store
They said no
The sky drifts away
the sky it drifts away
I saw you again that next night
dancing by yourself in the square
I walked up and tapped you on your shoulder
as the music got louder
and then we tried to slow dance
we tried to slow dance
we tried to slow dance
we tried to slow dance
I swear
I can hear everything you say

In My Head
05:15
|
|||
Dreams float in on the telephone wires
you see the flashing red and blue police lights
from two blocks away
You can feel it in the air
you can feel it on the back of your hand
as your hair stands up
You can feel it in the air
you can feel it all the way down to you toes
You walk alone
past empty houses
you walk alone
just looking at the closed storefronts
and into windows
These dreams float in on the telephone wires
If you could wait for this, I think you would
I am short a couple dollars right now
My credit card is all maxed out
You watch a FedEx truck pass by on the other side of the road
You are going somewhere
Oh you are going somewhere
It was like two years ago I think
when that thought first occurred to you
but you made your peace
yeah you made your peace
These dreams float in on the telephone wires
but oh let me tell you
in my head, I mean in my head
everything is going to be fine
In my head, oh yeah i mean in my head
everything is going to be fine
You fell asleep near the state capital
underneath a bush in the sculpture garden
then the sun came out at 7 a.m. in the morning
you grabbed your coat and walked toward the square
Oh in my head, I mean in my head
everything is going to be alright
In my head, I mean in my head
everything, everything is coming around
In my head, in my head I mean
You had a much better feel
the way things turned out
You stole some bread from the Five & Dime General Store
Then you snuck into one of those fancy hotels
and washed your hair
and stole a newspaper
Spent all afternoon reading in the square
Oh I see you in my head
In my head, I mean in my head
In my head, I mean in my head
everything is OK

Levels
01:56
|
|||
There are levels to this
and you know it
and I know it too
There are levels to this
and you are still trying to find your way
out of here
You feel stuck inside a square
you feel stuck in a valley
between two mountains
there is the sky overhead
closing in on you
you try to adjust
but you can't
You adjust your pants
pull them up
there is no way
you are getting out of here
There are different levels to this
There are levels
and you see them and I do too
you see them
and I do too

The narrow world
it swallows you alive
there are only so many times
you can pass those things
with those things getting into your mind
It is 3 a.m. when the lights come on
and shine right in your eyes
It is 3 a.m. when they kick you in the leg
and wake you up
The narrow world
it will eat you alive
The narrow world
I can see it in your eyes

Blue Views
03:58
|
|||
You catch yourself
staring at the window
You catch yourself
following the shadows
that the streetlights make
on your street
another car comes by
someone sees you
looking out the window
Here it comes again
that feeling
here it comes again
all the way in the pit of your stomach
here it comes again
the same car circling your block
two years ago you walked to that church
just to look at the icon on display
all lit up in the night
like the statues near the square
and just like the statues
all you can do is stare
all you can do is stare
You take in these blue views
Oh you take in these blue views
You drive up in the hills
to see something different
but it is all the same
Here it comes again
that feeling
all the way
all the way in the pit of your stomach
It keeps you on your toes I guess
you pull off the road
a scenic overpass
just to take in these blue views
just to take in these blue views
It is stretched out
all in front of you
It is stretched out
these blue views
there is the city
and more mountains in the distance
there goes the river
you take in these blue views
you take in these blue views
blue views

Sometimes
02:52
|
|||
You have been dreaming
of your own demise
sleeping in a tent out by the old train station
in the morning you walk over to the REI bathrooms
to wash your face
you try to steal some gloves
but they catch you again
When you walk toward town
everything looks the same
you have lost all connection to this place
Sometimes thats the way things go
Sometimes thats the way things go
Sometimes thats the way things go
In the evening the sky turns orange
then purple, then grey
On go the streetlights
turning each building a different color
Later that night
you try to sneak into one of those fancy hotel on the square
but the doorman throws you out
Sometimes things go this way
sometimes things go this way
sometimes things go this way

Red Light
03:10
|
|||
There is a red light
out the window right above your head
The dreams they float up into the wind
and who can blame them
they have better places to go
and so do we
Lets blow this town
lets get in the car
and get on the highway as fast as we can
In the sky I only see two clouds
and one airplane
The road it cuts through the mountains
you wave goodbye with your left hand
you wave goodbye with your left hand
The night settles
it starts in the east and moves to the west
you see that red light again in front of you
Here in the desert
here in the desert
it can be hard to breathe
even at night
you thought you found a way
you thought you found a way out of here
and maybe you were right
You turn off the highway
into a scenic viewpoint
but its night and too dark outside to see anything
but there is a moon
and stars
they are flying out of here
one by one
they are blinking on and off
they blink on and off
there is that red light again
it is driving away from you

Need Some Money
02:11
|
|||
We drove out of Santa Fe around 5 p.m
There was not a single could in the sky
We hit a gas station off the highway
the lights were barely on
and only one person inside
Oh they had that look
you know what I am talking about
in their eyes
We drove all night just to get away from the scene
there is something about the mountain air in the morning
you could feel it
you could feel it in the back of your throat
all the way into your lungs
The clouds roll in and it started raining
Unfortunately for us, the cops were not far behind
they were not far behind
The police officer looked at me
He said, "son, don't you know there is a war going on? What are you doing?"
To that I had no good answer
I said, "I just need some money sire, I just need some money sir."

Almost Home
02:40
|
|||
Time it can go on like this forever
You move to a town expecting to stay one year
Oh, twenty years fly by
You have lived on the same street
moved across the block 15 years ago
This year you got so drunk before you went to the Burning of Zozobra
You don't remember anything for the second year in a row
And now the sun rises
you have been counting
this is your 7,465 sunrise here in this town
It is hard to put a feeling on this
you don't really feel trapped
you feel something else
You take a deep breath when you are drinking your tea
what does it mean, what does it mean
this feeling
somewhere between being trapped and almost home
somewhere between being trapped and almost being home
It feels like being trapped and almost home
and the sun it rises again
