All these dreams of the young
float on the highways
of the western states
and all these highways
they seem to grow wider
with each passing year
The lights at the top of buildings
seen from a hundred miles in the distance
they blink on and off
they blink on and off
sending out morse code
to all these dreams of the young
traveling the western highways
The sky over the lake
turns a weird shade of purple
and then the sky turns black again
These dreams of the young
caught up in the sky
over the cities
stretching out their legs
slowly rising
over the Rocky Mountains
All these dreams of the young
push out toward the Pacific Ocean
Oh to lay on the beach
in California
Oh to look up at the sky
one of these nights
to look up at the sky
on one of these nights
and see heaven
Yeah all these dreams
all these dreams
they will see heaven

1996 Summer Olympics
04:12
|
|||
You are walking with your Aunt
on the endless suburban sidewalks
that drift off into the summer darkness
Oh this was right after watching the 1996 Summer Olympics
on TV in her apartment
Michael Johnson had just run and won gold in the 200
Oh you look up toward the sky
it is just turning purple
fading in, oh fading in
to an even darker shade of purple
All these duplexes look the same
your Aunt points out someone
who put up their Halloween decorations way too early
It is almost August
school is about to begin
these are the kinds of memories
you remember
You see the city lights way off downtown
it will be years before you are drawn to those
You drove across the western United States
sometime during the summer of 2006
10 years seems like such a long time
but the next 10 years will go by so fast
You think about the bombing at the Olympic Park
and you think about the hurricane last year
These kinds of things go into all our memories
Oh the night is getting dark
and these are the kinds of memories you remember
these are the kinds of memories that you remember
that you will remember
That night you thought about the future
and where you would be 10 years from then
that night you thought about the future
where you would be 20 years from now
Your Aunt came into the living room
and turned off the light
and then closed the window curtain
You fall asleep on the couch
Oh these are the kinds of memories you remember
these are the kinds of memories you remember

State Trooper II
02:35
|
|||
I am driving through the empty western nothingness
with only grass and hills on my right
and then more grass and more hills on my left
Oh the highway goes on for miles
in a straight line, in a straight line
I am alone with my thoughts
and a tape cassette of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska
Oh Mr. State Trooper please don't stop me
please don't stop me
but come to think of it I haven't see a state trooper this whole trip
The road keeps going
the road keeps going forever
Oh Mr. State Trooper
I have a clear conscience
I have a clear conscience
Oh and the road keeps going
the road keeps going forever
out to Denver
I'll get there at 8 pm
I will get there at 8 pm
I will get there at 8 pm

The Deal
02:06
|
|||
Dreams are here
in the back of this pickup truck
going like 8 down the highway
Oh you see the lights of city
you hear the sounds coming down
Something to keep you.awake
is what is needed
something to shake things up
that is what you are looking for
Oh the night has it's price
as does everything else
the night has it's price
just like everything else
You shake hands
you make the deal
the stars are your witness
somewhere up in the night sky
The streetlights forms a halo around you head
Oh you are coming up
you are coming up for air
You can feel it now
you can feel it now
|
||||
5. |
||||
You are standing in a field
by the highway out near the airport
to the west is the city
and the mountains they are rising up
to the east is nothing
nothing but straight lines
and the sky
It looks like it might rain
and you, you need a ride
so you walk toward the highway
and put your thumb in the air
and look east for headlights
you look east for headlights
It's been about an hour
and you haven't seen anything
except the sky
go from purple to black
way off in the distance
you see the lights of the city
and they are not getting any closer
at least not right now
It's another hour before you get a ride
all the way into town
someone going to one of those hotels
by the convention center
the lights they get bigger
at least in your eyes
You head to a bar
across the street from Bubba Gump Shrimp
right next to the Convention Center
oh everyone is out tonight
you meet two guys from Oklahoma
and they buy you a couple rounds
to make the night go faster
it spins out of control
before you can even count to five
but you wake up back in your hotel room
with a headache and the lights on
oh you stay in bed until 3
just watching the cars go by
outside your window
You finally make it out for a bite to eat
it's already 7 o'clock
Oh standing out in the purple darkness
you find your place
it is all coming around
right back how you made it
You remember something like 5 years ago
when this town was different
the streets seemed wider then
Something blows by your left ear
goddamn this wind
it's about to rain again
yeah it's about to rain again
You are standing out in the purple darkness
but everything is getting gray

Proof of Life
02:25
|
|||
All of this time
I remember little
Oh but the world is generous
to some people
I watch the lightning
streak across the sky
You listen for the thunder
all alone in your room
here it comes
The earth
makes both head and cold
I'm trying to remember
last time I felt this way
I just need proof
and so do you
I need that proof
and so do you
Proof of life is right here
Proof of life is right in your hands
Don't let it get away

Reach Out
02:33
|
|||
Oh the clouds are low
in the sky tonight
you can see the headlights
on the highway
bleed into the very bottom of the clouds
Oh the mountains
fade into the distance
I can see your eyes now
they are looking out the window
they are looking out the window
Oh reach out with your hands
Oh reach out your hands
into the night
I can see it in your eyes now
I can see it coming through
so clear
We reach the city
you hop out at the first stoplight
and I don't see you again
for almost two nights
until we meet at that bar
down near the baseball stadium
Oh reach out your hands
Oh reach out your hands
into the night
Oh reach out your hands
Oh reach out your hands
into the night

The Program
01:42
|
|||
You'll have your turn
one of these days
as per protocol though
we are standing in line
It is January 8th
wet snow falls on your feet
it muffles the sounds
and the colors too
Both of you are
long since gone
I turned my back too
on that moment ago
not for nostalgia sure
but for something else
I am older than that now
and so are you
It started raining
while we were waiting in line
This is the program
this is the program
we stand before a small crowd
let everyone in
Oh you can see it all
but you are helpless
you are helpless too

Rain on the Lake
04:49
|
|||
Fortune does not smile on you now
you lick your finger and stick it up in the air
you can't tell which way the wind is blowing
because it is raining
it is raining
You stare across the lake
at the city reflected in the water
it separates
the raindrops they have started
you stole a car
and we drove up to Blackhawk
going like 110 on those mountain roads
we played blackjack for like 3 days straight
and then you had to sell the car
so we had someplace to stay
I see it in your eyes now
you have somewhere you need to go
oh you give me that look every couple days
we got a ride up to this town up north
it had one road
yeah that was the whole town
we drank every night at this bar called Antlers
oh by the third night I could barely see
the bartender had to walk me home
to the tent where we were staying outside of town
Oh the next day all I could see was the rain
Oh the next day all I could see was the rain
Oh all could see was the rain
All I could see was the rain
All I can see is the rain
All I can see is the rain
Yeah I have no idea where you are right now
oh but wherever you are
I bet you can see the rain
I bet you can see
I bet you can see the rain

The Night Circles
02:49
|
|||
Oh night circles around you
You feel it way up there in the air
There is lightning
way up over the mountains
there is lightning over the city
oh you find your place
hiding out under a church awning
to escape the sudden rain
Oh you can feel it
Oh you can feel it
Oh you can feel it
you can feel it
The light from the liquor store sign
points you in the right direction
Oh the light from the liquor store
calls you
The night circles around you again
puts you right in your place
The guy at the front counter asks you for your ID
It has been ten years since you had one
you grab everything and make a break for it
right into the alley
and no one is chasing you
There is lightning again over the city
the night circles
the night circles
Oh the night circles
you

At the Party
04:10
|
|||
You got out of there right in time
you got in your car and took off
across all the western states
and then you drove all the way through the night
Past the
you are in a middle of a field
and you found a path that led by a tree
you are going to make the most of this day
I'll be at the party tomorrow
I'll be at the party tomorrow
Oh and in this moment are you really
all alone
In this moment, right in this moment
have you ever been alone
I got back in the car
I had the sun on my left arm
I had the radio on
playing a Tom Petty song
yeah yeah yeah, I know
then we went over the mountains
and I had to shift down to a lower gear
oh man there is only so much time
But I'll be at the party tomorrow
Oh I'll be at the party tomorrow
Oh and in this moment
do you really feel what it is like to be alone
yeah in this moment do you really feel
what it is like to be alone
I'll be at the party tomorrow
I'll be at the party tomorrow
yeah I'll be at the party tomorrow
I'll be at the party tomorrow
