There's the city up ahead those lights down there Oh keep going, keep going I'm rolling with the river now I'm just headlights through the snow Oh watch the road, watch the road Ah close your eyes and just dream She flies by in a BMW going like 90 I'm rolling with the window down with the cold winter air on my face It's halftime I watch the trees go by like a million of them I'm rolling with the river again I see the lights they are getting bigger the snow hits the windshield and your mind is way off somewhere else oh you are trying so hard so hard to stay awake There is Marzahn out the window to your right We head towards the city, through the deep unseen snow We head towards the city, through the deep unseen snow We head towards the city and you were trying so hard to stay away Oh here it goes watch the road I'm rolling with the river I'm headlights through the snow And now we head towards the city, through the deep unseen snow Towards the city, through the deep unseen snow

The empty meeting house in the fading fluorescent red light The sign says Konnekt Everything So connect everything He says, "Art for art's sake only" and I, I tend to disagree and I think you do too All eyes on the wall And there is stillness in the air A low humming sound it fills your mind He says, "this one, is for art's sake only" And again I disagree and I think you do too Falling, falling, falling into the same routine The sign says Konnekt Everything So connect everything Oh the winter nights they hang heavy outside the door and we talk in the light from your cigarette Falling, falling, falling into the same routine

Cemetery 02:50
Oh if there is one thing I know we are miles from where we started take my hand or don't take it I don't know which way to go and neither do you The grass grows so high in the cemetery The grass grows so high We always lose our way on this one block all the apartment buildings are perfect geometric forms and they all look the same I'm still walking it's like 3 a.m. All the apartment buildings are the same color and they look the same There are more apartment buildings I think that one over there is yours but I can't tell Oh here we go again this feeling is fine with me

My Revival 02:29
I'm in my own forcefield now but the walls are peeling away We are in some artist's loft looking out on the Spree River Windows shake with the wind The windows shake and you watch a starling circle around above the city I'm in the middle of my revival Oh I’m in the middle of my revival Then you stood up from the couch and put a bookmark in the book you were reading and then you went to make tea and it got darker outside

Tony is by the wall kissing his girlfriend David is up in the window and now he has an idea for a song The guard in the guardtower He moves his gun to his other shoulder Iggy is on the sidewalk just trying to come clean Oh it's one of those autumn days everything so dangerously grey The street is quiet now and I have nothing to say How come, how come you took the words away It's a three part program I'm still on the first part We walked across the bridge in the fading evening light and the birds rush away and you brush the hair from your face It's getting cold now what happened to these words you took the words away We didn't talk at all was the radio on? That I don't remember We are by the Wall again and the guard moves his gun to his other shoulder I'm in the firing line and you are in the firing line too

If it's me it's ok You are just standing there throwing pills across the street When you were sick you had everything figured out you just stayed in bed but now you are looking for trouble You took some matches out of your pocket there are only a few people that you trust in this way you are looking for trouble and on it goes They sweep the glass off the street There is conflict coming Next week We crowded into the same apartment building all to escape the rain I'm going somewhere else and you are too there are too many nights like this one At heart I know you have our best interests in mind But you are looking for trouble and trouble will find you I went this way and you went that way

Windswept 02:21
Oh man I had a dream last night I swear I saw David Bowie on the other side of the street The sky was wet and the clouds were blue Oh man I forgot I had something to tell you It goes on this dream of mine and you shake with the wind (we were sitting outdoors) This is not the first time Oh my head is full of so many things Now is not the right time Things are shooting off all around us I'm feeling windswept right at this moment where is your lust for life? where is your devil may care attitude? and you say, "I don't know, things change rather quickly..." I'm feeling windswept and you're feeling windswept too And then everything shoots off all around us and you don't make a sound I'm so windswept and you're windswept too

Lights go off in the station as you walk up the stairs You feel the cold wind on your back You're waiting for the train You're waiting for the pain of another night like this You hear sirens in the distance Union and Hertha supporters are fighting across the tracks Oh let me in I'm waiting for the train I'm waiting for the pain of another night just like this one I'm waiting for the train I'm waiting for the pain of another night like this again In your eyes I see an ending In your eyes I see an "I don't care" attitude I'm waiting for the train I'm waiting for the pain of another night just like this again

Windowpane 03:15
Come on, Sally who says that in mixed company now We were at a restaurant in Tiergarten I tried to introduce you to my friend Things got cold right away as I thought they would but that is part of the fun We went for a long walk afterwards the sun started coming out you could hear the birds even in winter something is still alive I listen for my breath at night just to make sure just to make sure I'm alive The wind hits the windowpane the wind it carries off down the street There is someone standing off by himself in an overcoat he turns around I can tell he's smoking a cigarette It starts to snow and the wind hits the windowpane again the light from the streetlight only goes so far I didn't see you until almost two weeks later not much had changed the sky is overcast again you are just finding your way It is late afternoon we run into each other outside the department store there are people outside telling you not to go in but you go in anyway

The lights go off all over town I know you know but I want to say... I can't tell at all what you wrote on that wall but it must be something worth it to go through this effort tonight No lights tonight There are no lights tonight No lights tonight There are no more lights tonight No lights tonight There are no more lights on this street tonight

about

Second 12 song album of my “Berlin Trilogy”. All songs about fictional stories of time spent in Berlin last year, visions of the city in winter, and the city's 20th century history. Have spent a lot of time recently listening to David Bowie’s album “Heroes” and Iggy Pop’s album The Idiot. Album title and some lyrical content comes from the book Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood. Also took some inspiration form the parts of the book Dark Star by Alan Furst that are set in Berlin.

Recorded: April - July 2020 in San Francisco, CA

Instruments used: microKorg synthesizer, wood flute, acoustic guitar, free online drum machine
